My name is Mindy Levine. I have been a teacher for over 30 years. I started at Haynes when it reopened about 14 years ago. My background is in communication, handicapped as well as general education.

Teaching kindergarten has been a gift. I have taught infants through high school students and kinder is my home. I enjoy the children, their excitement every time we start an adventure learning something new. I love when my children feel empowered and view themselves as writer’s, illustrators, scientists, mathematicians and actors and on and on. I look forward to coming to school each day and sharing in their passions. I love being a teacher.

My other passion, is my love for animals. I have four dogs, three horses and one sweet donkey! It gives me joy to share this love with my students.

This year I am celebrating 20 years of teaching!!! I cannot believe how quickly time passes–but again, when you do something you love, time does fly…

I’ve taught students throughout LAUSD, including being an Instructional Coach for 6 years in the area of literacy and in math. I’ve also worked at very diverse schools within our Local District–ranging from high performing to severe special ed facilities. I completed my CA
Administrative Credential and received a Masters of Science in EducationalLeadership. This is my 8th year at Haynes Street Charter School.

I am happily married, and have two children, ages 15 and 11. Both my children attended Haynes. My oldest is a sophmore at El Camino Real Charter High, and my youngest attends 6th grade in the Las Virgines School District. They are very busy kids–and both active leaders in their school communities.
My family loves being members of the Haynes Mustang Family! It is a special place to be….”The Best Little School in the Valley.”

I have been teaching in the Los Angeles Unified School District for over 20 years. I have been teaching Kindergarten for 11 years. Before joining the kindergarten team, I taught grades 1-4 as well as 6th, high school special education, and teacher training classes with the extension program at UCLA.

I moved here from Oregon. I have a background in psychology and special education. I am fluent in sign language.

I have 3 children, Nikolay, 17 years old, Vitaly, 16 years old, and Masha, 16 years old. I spend my free time reading and going places with my family. I LOVE to go to Disneyland and just watch the crowds.

My goal for my class is to teach them to believe that they are learners and to equip them with the skills they need to be strong and productive learners.

I hope they will leave kindergarten, not only with the ability to read, write and compute, but also with the ability to assertively stand up for themselves by using their words.

I will provide an organized classroom full of comfort, and open-mindedness.  I will keep all communication open as well.

I believe that communication is one of the main factors in providing student success as well as my own.  I will be a nurturer as well as a disciplinarian.  I will provide guidance and support for all the families and students I work with.  I want you to remember that I want this year to be fun and memorable.  A smile translates a thousand words, and I hope to leave a big one on your child’s face while encouraging excitement about learning

This will be my 20th year teaching elementary school. I’ve taught all grades, except for third. I enjoy meeting students where they are and challenging them to stretch and grow in all areas, not just academics.

I have two children of my own, an tenth-grader and a fifth-grader. Both of them are involved in sports. I really love to see them have fun and learn new things. As a family, we enjoy all kinds of sporting events, traveling, and just being together.

This is a very special time for me because I am returning to Haynes. I am beginning my 14th year of teaching. I started teaching fourth grade in New York while obtaining my master’s degree in both elementary and special education. I moved to California and was very fortunate to do my student teaching at Haynes. I spent my first 6 years at Haynes teaching first grade. I love math and became a Math Coach for a year. I really missed working with the students and seeing them grow over the year, so I went back to the classroom at Lorne Street School. I taught first grade for 2 years and then moved up to second grade for the last 3 years. I got married last summer in beautiful Lake Tahoe where we love to take family vacations.

I have one daughter who is 10 years old. She is entering 5th grade at Lorne Magnet. She loves to dance, swim, and play softball. I am so happy to be part of the Haynes family again. This is going to be a fantastic year!

Hi, I’m Sandi Black. This will be my 29th year of teaching, and my 11th at Haynes! I have taught all grade levels 1st-5th, but I think 2nd grade is my favorite. In addition to being a classroom teacher, I was a literacy coach for 3 years. I am very proud to be a National Board Certified Teacher, and I will be working this year on renewing that credential.  I live in Thousand Oaks, where I enjoy the outdoors and go on a lot of beautiful hikes. In my free time I play the flute in my temple’s band, which is a lot of fun and very challenging. I have a grown son who lives in Scottsdale, Arizona. I am looking forward to a fantastic year!

Welcome and Hello – I am in my 19th year as a teacher at Haynes CES, and I was one of the original teachers who helped reopen the school. I taught fifth grade for 11 years, and this is my 8th year teaching third grade.

I have been married for 27 years to Meg Foss, and we have a 24 year old daughter, Briana, who is a civil engineer working as a water resources/environmental engineer. We also have a dog, Zack, who is 15 years old.

I am a strong believer in public education, and my daughter attended LAUSD public schools from K through 12th grade and received a great education. Besides being a fully credentialed teacher, I have a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from CSUN, a Masters of Fine Arts Degree from New York University, and a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Studies from Penn State University. In addition to my responsibilities as a teacher, I am the math lead teacher at Haynes, the UTLA representative, and have traveled with the 5th grade class to Astrocamp for the past 12 years. I also set up and took a group of Haynes students and parents to the last Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C..

Before becoming a teacher and moving to Los Angeles, I lived in New York City for 15 years, and worked in the film business. I have been fortunate to have worked and traveled all over the world, and gained many experiences that have had a great impact on my life. In addition to the love of travel, I enjoy skiing, hiking, hanging out in the mountains, going to the movies, and spending time with family and good friends.

I was born and raised in California’s Central Valley where my family has farmed and ranched for more than a century. I received my BA and MS from UC Berkeley, and then worked as a writer and editor in the publishing industry for ten years. During that time, I indulged and satisfied my passion for international travel. After marrying and having children, I was a stay-at-home mom for ten years. When my first child started kindergarten, I began volunteering at her school (Welby Way – Haynes wasn’t open then). That’s when I first considered a career in education.

Teaching: Because I came late to teaching, I especially appreciate its variety, unique opportunities for creativity and never-ending challenges. It is never boring! I have been teaching for seventeen years and have taught every elementary grade. With my extraordinary grade level partner, Mrs. Ali, I have been teaching fourth grade for seven years. I feel like we finally have it down.

Thoughts on Education: I am a vehement supporter of public education. I believe we must guard it vigilantly and resist attempts to weaken or privatize our schools. All three of my children exclusively attended LAUSD schools. They have successfully matriculated at our nation’s top public and private universities because of their solid LAUSD educational foundation. Our District has its challenges, but our schools offer enormous opportunities to those students willing to seize them.

Rhonda Richard – Room 21 Email 5th Grade

This is my 12th year teaching elementary school, after staying home for many years with my own children and then returning to school to get my teaching credential at CSU Dominguez Hills. I got my undergraduate degree at U.C. San Diego in Communications/Visual Arts with a minor in Political Science, and worked for many years in the video/film business in San Francisco and Los Angeles. I have taught kindergarten, first, and second grade, and this will be my fourth year teaching fifth grade. I find teaching endlessly interesting for a lifelong learner like myself, and hugely rewarding! My goal is always to make each day engaging, relevant, nurturing, and fun.

I have two children of my own in college, a son and a daughter. I love to travel with my family and explore the cultures and histories of other countries. My other love is music. I play the guitar, ukulele, and the piano, sing in trios and quartets, and try to integrate music, the arts, and environmental awareness into our curriculum wherever possible.

I’m thrilled to be teaming up again with my longtime friend and wonderful colleague, Mrs. Isensee, and can’t wait to share an unforgettable year with all our new 5th graders!

Mrs. Denise Isensee – Room 22  Email 5th Grade

Teaching is something I first dreamed of doing when I was a third grader. I have always loved exploring new concepts with others, experimenting with ideas and materials, and learning about changes in the world around me. As a young adult I forgot about my dream to be a teacher and traveled down a different road instead. But, life is so very exciting and interesting and I find myself now realizing that third grade teaching dream.

As a young adult, I received my bachelor’s degree in economics from the California State University at Long Beach and worked for ten years as an Actuary in the insurance industry. I used math in my job to make financial projections and evaluate the economy, solving real world math problems daily. However, I yearned for a job that seemed more meaningful, so I began taking night classes, eventually earning an elementary teaching credential, and later a secondary mathematics teaching credential. After working at home, raising my two lovely daughters to school age, I finally began my teaching career when they began attending school. I have been a teacher for 8 years, including five years at Haynes teaching first, third, and fifth grades, and three years in middle school teaching seventh and eighth grade mathematics. I am thrilled to have found my home at Haynes partnering with Mrs. Richard who has been a treasured friend for 15 years –even before I became a teacher!

I am looking forward with excitement and anticipation to the beginning of a new school year with a new class of students. Fifth grade will be an amazing year filled with field trips, art, music, reading, writing, problem solving, exploring history and science, and traveling to AstroCamp together. I can’t wait to share this year’s journey with all of you!
